AST Overview: How Environments Wire Us
The Core Idea
Affective Socialization Theory (AST) proposes that our brains are not fixed. They are continuously shaped by our social environments through a process of recursive learning.
The Three Zones
Green Zone (Ventral Vagal)
Experience: Safe, connected, calm.
Yellow Zone (Sympathetic)
Experience: Anxious, vigilant, activated.
Red Zone (Dorsal)
Experience: Numb, collapsed, hopeless.
Agency Expectancy (AE)
- Collective AE: Learned through consistent, supportive responses.
- Commodified AE: Agency through consumption.
- Predatory AE: Agency through domination, competition, exploitation.
Key Variables
- MAT (Material Strain Index): MAT = MAT-O × 2 + MAT-S.
- MSI (Mood Stability Index): Consistency of emotional experience over time.
- SED' (Socialization Exposure Dose): Hours × Clarity × Consistency × Agency.
